Synology is a company renowned for its remarkable range of NAS devices. It’s the first time; Synology has launched an RT1900ac Simultaneous Dual-band Wi-Fi Broadband Router. It’s an impressive debut product which is reasonably priced dual-band, delivering speedy performance and is equipped with a nice selection of robust management features and I/O ports. It’s indeed a very late entry to the market that is already-crowded and contains very competent AC100, yet it deserves reviewing as nobody knows when and what a tide brings in. To check that, let’s have a look at its design, features and performance.

Features

  • Dual core 1.0 GHz, 256 MB DDR3
  • 3x3 MIMO Omni-directional high-gain dipole (2.4GHz / 5GHz)
  • USB 3.0 x 1 (5V, 1.5A power output) SD card reader x 1 (SDXC UHS-I, SDHC)
  • WPS, USB/SD eject, Power, Reset, Wi-Fi On/Off

The router has a matte-black casing with two legs that raise rear of the device up but you can also remove these legs to sit it flat or you can hang it on a wall. It contains an array of eight LED lights on the front edge, WAN (internet), 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio bands and wires Ethernet connectivity one for each port. It has removable ‘high gain’ antennas that use RP-SMA connectors.

It has four Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back, a power switch, a power jack and a WAN port. It holds a USB 3.0 port and an SD card slot on the right side and a Wi-Fi on/off switch and WPS button on the left. You can use USB 3.0 port to host an external device and an SD card to utilize router’s storage features. You can add more features to the router using a storage device.

One of its prominent features is its Linux-based operating system (firmware) which is called Synology Router Manager (SRM). It is a variation of Disk Station Manager (DSM) that is used for all Synology’s NAS servers. It offers a very organized and intuitive interface looking with Windows desktop and consisting of a package center, network center and an SRM help center. You can manage router’s various settings via network center.

It also allows you to create shortcuts for frequently used settings on desktop. It includes a Status screen displaying basic Wi-Fi and internet settings, CPU usage and, download and upload averages by device.  The wireless page allows you to assign a security level for each brand (WPA/WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise, WPA2 Enterprise), set up MAC filters, rename the SSID and configure guest networks. Its traffic control screen offers you to set up QoS bandwidth priorities and view download and upload charts.

The security screen offers VPN pass through and Firewall settings, Denial of Service (DOS) protection and IP address blocking. It also provides settings that allow you choose a mode (bridge, access point and router) and help you deal with network issues by configuring email, push notifications and SMS. Being a Wi-Fi router, It’s DS Router mobile app for iOS and android allows you to manage RT1900ac using your smartphone but it is limited to security, Parental control (you can make white list and blacklist and can schedule the time and content that a device can access) and Traffic control settings. It includes all the expected features like port forwarding, a DMZ, the ability to set up guest network, IPv6 support and MAC address filtering.

The package center is basically an app store which you can use along with SD card or an external hard drive to add applications to the router resulting in increase of its functionality and features. It also offers VPN server, media server and download station. The Download Station is one of the best PC-less download feature which allows you to quickly search for things on the Web and download them.

Synology RT1900 is one of the best wireless, Wi-Fi routers with robust applications. It is easy to install and configure taking almost less than five minutes.

Performance:

At a close range of 15 feet, on 5GHz band, it scores a sustained speed of 587Mbps crowning the charts of routers in 1900ac class. With increment of distance to 100 feet, it registers only 71Mbps because on this band, router’s affective range is short 150feet (with one wall in between). However, on 2.4GHz band, its range effectively stretches out to 180 feet but like other routers, the data rates on this band are much lower. The router scores 123Mbps and 65Mbps on close and long ranges respectively. These numbers are about average among 1900ac routers.

Its network storage performance is average when an external hard drive is used while via s Gigabit connection, it scores a sustained copy speed of 42Mbps (or 336Mbps) for reading and 40Mbps (or 320Mbps) for writing. These scores are just average among AC1900 routers. But it is still fast enough for local-network tasks such as backing up a Mac laptop using time machine or data sharing. Sinology RT1900ac passes 48 hour stress test with no problem and no disconnecting while it transfers data continuously between multiple clients. It costs $149.99
