It features a three-way speaker design that comprises a pair of two three-eight inch mid-range drivers and two sets of silk dome tweeters (a gold-ringed high-frequency super tweeter and a secondary tweeter on the edge of the unit. For every driver, there is a Sony S Master digital amp module inside.

There are two connection wells around the back, one with an Arc-enable HDMI output, plus two inputs and the other with a third HDMI and optical digital input and Ethernet. All these HDMI inputs support 4K Ultra HD sources with HDCP 2.2. It also includes a dual-band Wi-Fi supported by NFC one-touch connection and a USB port on the right hand side. The unit is supplied with a 130-watt wireless subwoofer which has a front-facing high glass ported design (adds a touch of glam) and a 6.5 inch driver. It is 7.5 inches large and 15 inches wide.

Pros:

  • Excellent dialogue articulation and sound clarity
  • HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 4K pass-through
  • Premium design

Cons:

  • A bit mild subwoofers
  • Relies heavily on Google Cast

The onscreen display gives the impression of company’s SongPal app with touch sensitive controls and having a graphical representation of all connected sources and inputs and a helpful wireless rear button at the top. The user interface is simply effective.

Sony being the first hardware manufacturers to support Google Cast, it continues the trend in HT-NT5. Due to this feature, you can control music from Cast-compatible audio apps via phone or other device and can play through the sound bar. The Sony HT-NT5 sound bar can now become a part of a whole-home audio system as Google Cast products can also support multi-room audio. Sony also provides its own Spotify Connect and SongPal Link multi-room system. By using Google Cast, you can stream music services such as Tune-in radio, Google Play music and Qobuz. It also supports Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay.

A Hi-Res Audio badge is compatible with 24-bit audio that includes DSD files. It is a powerful wireless subwoofer for deep, booming lows. Sony’s own higher-resolution LDAC Bluetooth codec can be used, all you need is to stream from a compatible LDAC mobile source.

The unit has its own video processing onboard that lifts electronics from Sony’s Blu-ray player line. Its super bit mapping combats color banding, a proprietary sonic upscaler for CD and Mp3 sources and plus DSEE HX. You can also create a multi channel surround system by connecting it with compatible Sony wireless bookshelf speakers. Sony HT-NT5 is an exceptional sound system with no setup or calibration requirements. You can adjust the subwoofer’s volume using the remote.

Performance:

Sony’s HT-NT5’s poise and refinement is obvious. Most sound bars are designed to excel with home theater but it nails through classical, rock and jazz music. HT-NT5 works well with full-size 5.1 channel systems and low to moderate volume levels. For music it is an above average sounding performer. As well as video is concerned, HT-NT5 projects more spacious and wider soundstage and clear dialogues.

Its excellent speaker control optimizes sound for both settings, lying flat or mounted on a wall. Its support for 4K allows you to enjoy a lifelike image alongside great sound. HT-NT5 has an RMS of 400 Watts which is extremely effective for a Wi-Fi speaker which is associated with more watts, louder a speaker is. Performance slightly varies with its orientation. When the bar is vertical, stereo imaging is best but it’s not a very big deal.

The midrange wireless woofers are angled within an acoustic dip. The edge facing tweeter keeps the sound stage crisp and nice when laid flat, and works great when they are vertical. The mid-range woofers operate upwards from 100Hz while tweeters are effective at 200Hz.

Sony HT-NT5 sound bar’s audio presets includes music and movie, game studio and standard and sports.  It also features a voice up mode which lifts dialogues and an umbrella ClearAudio + mode increments all sources for more Hi-Res presentation. If you are up to a refined 2.1 sound bar that not only does wonders with TV drama, but you can also use it as part of a whole home wireless audio system and also two-channel music playback, then the Sony HT-NT5 is worth considering. Its price is 798.00
